What is HTTP 402?
When the official rules of the internet were written in the late 1990s, the creators created a list of standard status codes that web servers use to communicate with browsers. You probably recognize error codes like 404 Not Found or 500 Internal Server Error.
Among those rules was HTTP 402, marked simply as “Reserved for future use.”
The inventors of the web knew that websites would eventually need a built-in way to charge tiny amounts of money—pennies or fractions of a cent—directly through the web browser. But in the 1990s, credit card systems couldn’t handle sub-cent payments because processing fees were too high.
Today, new digital payment rails and micro-transaction protocols have made instant, automatic micro-payments possible.
How a Machine-to-Machine Payment Works
Instead of sending a visitor to a separate checkout page or forcing them to create an account, an HTTP 402 interaction happens automatically behind the scenes:
- The Request: An AI agent asks a website for a specific piece of information or tool.
- The Prompt: The website’s server responds with an HTTP 402 signal saying, “This resource costs $0.02 to access.”
- The Payment: The AI agent automatically approves and sends the tiny payment in the background.
- The Delivery: The website verifies the payment and instantly delivers the requested information.
The entire process takes less than a second, without requiring a user account, password, or credit card form.
What Web Designers and Creators Need to Know
Preparing for the Agentic Web isn’t just for backend engineers. It changes how web teams design, build, and run everyday websites.
1. Flexible Pricing for Content and Tools
Instead of placing an entire website behind a monthly paywall, creators can start offering flexible, pay-as-you-go access:
- Specialized Research & Data: Charge $0.01 per query instead of forcing a full monthly subscription.
- Online Tools: Charge a tiny fee each time an automated tool runs a task, like converting a file or auditing a web page.
- Premium Articles: Allow readers or AI agents to unlock individual reports for a few cents without filling out a registration form.
2. Designing for Humans and AI at the Same Time
Websites now need to cater to two distinct audiences: Human Visitors who want clear visual design, branding, and easy navigation, and AI Agents that need organized, easy-to-read data.
While human readers see a clean page layout with a simple button to unlock an article, an AI agent interacting with the same web page can handle the payment and access the information automatically in the background.
3. Turning Bot Traffic into Revenue
For years, website owners viewed automated traffic as nuisance traffic to be blocked with CAPTCHAs. As AI agents become standard productivity tools for everyday users, blocking all automated traffic means turning away potential customers.
Using simple micro-payment gateways allows site owners to welcome helpful AI agents while ensuring the website gets paid for the data and resources it provides.
